October 9th - Meeting New Friends
After cleaning and unpacking we made toast and coffee for breakfast. I had a yogurt. Then some of the friends came by and visited. Gail, Jim, and Lawson Murphy dropped by and gave us some tips on where to buy things, and which places had the cheap prices. They brought fried dough called "hojaldres". Everyone but me really enjoyed them, why wheat? :( That was very sweet and thoughtful of the Murphy family! They decided they could take us into town for some grocery shopping, we all piled in, 7 of us in a 5 seater car. This is not illegal here I might add! This is also quite common! Kids sit in the trunks of SUV's all the time! Dylan and Danielle love it! The Mercado is where they took us for fresh fruit and veggies, frutas and legumbres, delicioso! We also went to Canasta Basica which is a goverement owned store so prices on staples are cheaper. We stopped at "Tourismo for a beautiful view of the river and saw our first monkey in the wild, but it was too quick for a picture! We drove down the road and was able to get fresh avocados off a return visits tree for free, Lawson about killed himself trying to get them. We also went to visit with the Sander's family. After visiting with them for a while we went to the Murphy's for dinner. We were starving! Gail made Panamanian potato salad, Baked Chicken, fresh papaya, and fresh avocado. For dessert she fried some "plantanos", they were awesome! We e-mailed home to let all know we were still alive and then they brought us home.
